Book Overview

This anthology demonstrates the richness and diversity of the American intellectual heritage. In it we see how Jonathan Edwards grapples with the problem of how to reconcile freedom and responsibility with Calvinist religious beliefs; how Franklin and Jefferson exemplified American enlightenment thought; and how the Transcendentalists, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, formulated their particular romantic idealist beliefs.

Best Anthology on American Philosophy

The best one volume anthology on American philosophy. All the selections are well chosen, the introductions to each section are very helpful in putting the works in their historical context, and all of the major works are included. If you want a sampling of American philosophy, this is the place to start! The "further reading" section is also very helpful in giving you other places to go for further enrichment.
