This is a wonderful book about the spirituality of recovery. You do not need to have chemical use problems to benefit from this book!I have found it particularly effective in working with adolescents as it present very specific things to do which kids can grasp more easily than some of the spiritual concepts of other recovery philosophies. With 4 steps in each of the 4 directions - the Physical, the Realm of Introspective Thought, The Realm of Knowledge and Enlightenment, and the Spritual - (for an obvious total of 16 steps), it may seem cumbersome and overwhelming at first. But each of the steps is so simple and so specific that it easy to get started with doing the positive. For example, step 3 of the Physical says "Beginning today I will stop inflicting pain (either physical or emotional) on others or myself." Simple, specific, profound. The spirituality offered is Native American and, although written from experience with and designed for Native Americans, non-natives can benifit greatly from such simple and yet profound steps. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to give life more meaning.
