Why read a book if you can't discuss it with friends over a good meal? That's the motto of The Alpha Gals Book Club. They've been reading books and cooking for each other since 2004. This cookbook is a compendium of recipes they begged each other to share, along with those from chefs and from the restaurants they enjoyed together around Portland's hip restaurant scene. Their book selections have taken them all around the culinary world, as the international recipes reflect, but there is naturally an emphasis on recipes showcasing the bounty of the Pacific Northwest-seafood, fruit, berries, and mushrooms. And because the book club membership varies vastly in both ability and enthusiasm for cooking, there are recipes for every skill level, with pictures of all the dishes. The book selections include best sellers and the more obscure, comedies and horror, classics and brand new publications, with a bent toward regional authors, some of whom kindly came to supper to discuss their books.
