The novel is built around Alma Aldridge's humorous stories of her escapades and misadventures, as well as tearful tellings of her parents' broken dreams.
In this coming-of-age tale, a young girl faces up to the day-to-day challenges of a life in a tough place, at a tough time. As she grows more confident of her own strengths, she is drawn to a young man for his kindness to her family. At a very young age, Alma strikes out on her own, taking on risks and responsibilities far beyond her years.
