Am I trapped in the wrong body?
Am I in love with the wrong person?
What if I don't want to be a wife or mother?
These are hard enough questions for any teenager to ask themselves. But in Beatrix's community, when the person asking is trans, gay, or not interested in motherhood, the wrong answers could mean banishment, or even death. And so all Beatrix and her two best friends can do is try to fit into the strange and dangerous world in which they live. A world where all adult women transform into animals for one week every month. A world where in July, a woman might be a goldfish, and in August, a grizzly bear. A world where, whenever she is in her human form, a woman's sole purpose in life is to help rebuild the dwindling human race by caring for her assigned husband and having as many babies as possible.
But you can only pretend to be someone you're not for so long. When Beatrix and her friends finally reach their breaking points and reject the roles that have been laid out for them, they face losing their friendship, their freedom and even their lives.
