Five Stars for the City of Burgos...

... and not so much for this cheap little book, the only value of which will be to convince you that Burgos is well worth visiting. In fact, all the cities of upper Castile and Leon are glorious - Burgos, Segovia, Avila, Salamanca, Zamora, Leon, Astorga, even oversized Valladolid - are far more attractive, being real places occupied chiefly by real Spaniards, than the over-hyped cities of the south. And the surprise is that they have a goodly share of the "Moorish" art and architecture you'd need to stand in long lines to see in Granada, as well as wonders from the Christian Renaissance and Baroque. The cathedral of Burgos, shown on the cover of this book, contains the tomb of El Cid, the real & legendary hero of the Reconquest. High above the tomb is a ceiling in the form of a 'mudejar/moorish' star, breathtakingly beautiful. Read El Cid in the translation by W.S. Merwin before you go...
