This book begins in a "world" far away, a world named after its creator Alamos. Dracus and Brado are both creatures simply called "gardeners." They live in a secluded valley on the world of Alamos. Dracus and Brado leave the garden after dreadful hooded creatures called "seekers" destroy everyone in the garden valley.

In a desperate attempt to bring the garden people back to life the two embark on a mission to partake of the fruit of a White Tree, a tree whose fruit is said to grant the wish of any who partake of its fruit. But what happens is more than they bargain for. They meet great friends, go to fantastical places and meet terrifying enemies. What happens here sets the stage for the future of the world of Alamos.
