Born on 30th July 1948, Sankar Kumar Sanyal became an Advocate of Calcutta High Court and was appointed as "Justice of Peace" in 1972 by Sri A.L. Dias, the then Governor of West Bengal. He became Hon'y Secretary of Harijan Sevak Sangh, Bengal in 1978 and installed 5,31,018 improved Smokeless Chullahs in four districts of West Bengal with help of KVIC, GOI, constructed 536 sanitary latrines for promotion of rural health and hundreds of low cost houses with assistance from CAPART, GOI for the poor in several districts of West Bengal. He organized Entrepreneurship Development Programme of KVIC, GOI since 2005-2006 and trained 1,752 entrepreneurs who invested Rs. 50,42,90,407.00 (Fifty Crores Forty Two Lakhs Ninety Thousands Four Hundred and Seven Rupees) financed by Nationalized Banks. Established a Free Residential Primary School and numerous pre-primary free education centers throughout Bengal to provide free education to 75,000 children of poor and marginalized communities since 1980s.Prof. Dr. Sanyal was appointed as the President, All India Harijan Sevak Sangh, Delhi (HSS) - a National Leavel Voluntary Organization founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1932. He succeeded to this universally acclaimed post once occupied by national leaders like Sri G.D. Birla, Mata Rameswari Nehru, Sri Viyogi Hariji, Didi Nirmala Deshpande and other Gandhian stalwarts of the country, on 24th April 2013 after the passing away of Padma Vibhushan Nirmala Deshpande, spiritual daughter of Sant Vinoba Bhabe and and Peace Activist of International repute with whom he was extremely close. It is worth mentioning that he was the Vice President of the Sangh during the Presidentship of Nirmala Deshpande. He was a Member of the Governing Body and Executive Committee of Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti, an autonomous body under Ministry of Culture, GOI Chaired by Hon'ble Prime Minister of India.
