The War was Over, or Was It?

Joshua Buckalew had survived the war which freed Texas from Mexican control and had gone home to begin life anew. Yet the hardest battles were yet to come. Raiding Comanches and scavengers; renegades that were more inhuman than human threatened the very existence of these now free men and their families. Authenticity runs through out the book, from the history of Texas to the kind of characters created by Mr. Kelton. Characters who are people we really have met in our lives--people who have the same dreams and aspirations--home, family, peace. This is a good story that needs to be read and told about our glorious past and the settlement of the West.

good read

I' addicted to Elmer Kelton books I started reading his stories only a couple of months ago and know I have to find all of them and finish them. They are very easy and unforgettable. you will read them over and over again.

Good story

Joshua Buckalew and his sidekick Muley Dodd are making their way home after Sam Houston has led the Texans to victory in the war for independence from Mexico. Savoring their triumph over Santa Anna, the two men know that they still have a difficult journey to make in order to reach their cabin in central Texas. On the way they meet another party of travelers who are heading in the same direction, so they join forces in order to have reinforcements in case they are attacked. On the way they encounter thieves and raiding Indians, and the danger continues once they return to their land. Elmer Kelton knows how to tell a good story, and he makes the book even more interesting by using incidents from history as a backdrop. This is a good book for those who enjoy Western novels.
