Africa For The Willing chronicles a cross-section of Africa that few Westerners have witnessed. Besides being a travel memoir, it is a cultural, historical and tribal study of eighteen African countries and thirty-eight tribes. It is a snapshot in time. Politically speaking, there have been changes throughout the continent of Africa since our travels in 1972. Drought, famine, pandemics, coups and warfare followed at our heels. For this reason, it has always been difficult to duplicate our route. My husband and I traveled via local transportation, eating regional foods, staying at the least expensive lodgings, carrying our own loads and accepting whatever came along without feeling we should be treated any differently. Thus, we increased our interactions with the Indigenous population. A modern day traveler can expect the same.We journeyed with no definite route in mind and no schedules to keep. Our motto was: "Whatever happens it is bound to be interesting " We were determined to join the ranks of the intrepid who had explored Africa's three great river systems: THE NIGER, THE CONGO AND THE NILE.
