Published in 1991, this is 96 pages of basic information and the first in-depth look at these technical marvels and the sailors who man them. This description may be from another edition of this product.
At 96 pages, you are not going to get every detail on these important ships in the US Navy. Published in 1991, there is a lot of material that is still top secret, so this book is an overview of the ship's capabilities. Having said that, it is interesting, informative and very good as a primer. The narrative provides a short history of the role of the cruiser and insight as to what the current role is in the US Navy. History buffs of naval ships are disappointed with modern US designs - so much is hidden below decks, you think you are not getting your money's worth - a photo showing a Soviet Cruiser evokes much interest, it seems like everything but the kitchen sink is on deck. The modern Cruiser is very expensive, so there are not many of them. They have to protect themselves and carriers against missle attacks. This requires very sophisitcated radar (the Aegis, hence the ship's type) with an array of air-air missles, Tomahawks, anti sub torpedeos. I would have preferred to see more line diagrams and cutaway views to give it a full five stars. This is a very good, if short, book. There may be others out there more detailed, but if you are just getting into naval history or do not want to get bogged down in factoids, this is a good place to start.
