Principal general travel guide for the old "Big Bend" area

I refer to 'the old "Big Bend" area' as this guide covers mostly those areas south of the old rail line through the Trans-Pecos region to El Paso that was long used to define the "Big Bend". This very useful guide to the Big Bend covers pretty much every aspect that travellers from afar might be interested in: national and state parks, other attractions such as the Prude Ranch and the MacDonald Observatory in the Davis Mountains, hiking and other sorts of venturing out-of-doors, and motels/RV parks as well as other forms of catering for those who don't want to camp. Mr. Glendenning has assembled an excellent potpourri of history and lore about these places. There is a calendar of events (as interesting as whatever you see here may be, you're always missing something else, hot/cold/dry/wet) as well as a good bibliography of this interesting region, fabulous in the true sense of the word. Note, however, that this book does not quite overlap with the author's excellent "From Big Bend to Carlsbad : a traveler's guide" [1995], in which the emphasis is more on natural phenomena; also, of course, that guide takes the traveller up to the Guadalupe Mountains and Carlsbad Caverns National Parks, outside of the Big Bend region proper. So both books will be valuable if you're lucky enough to have that much time in these parts.

Trip saving adventures

Me and a buddy just got back from the big bend region which we visited over spring break. Our main goal was to hike in the national park, and after browsing this book ahead of time, we also were able to plan a day trip into Mexico. When some of our park plans fell through, we used this book to contact different outfitters. When more of our plans fell through, we simply used this book to look up what else we could do in a particular town, it saved our trip! Just be sure to call ahead for pricing updates with the contact info provided. And if you're going to Mexico, just park in Presidio and walk 2 miles as apposed to paying the $16/person round trip cab fair. Bring your passport, and don't forget about the 1:30pm siesta.
