This book applies modern object-relations theory to a population for which the 'treatment du jour' is increasingly cognitive-behavioral. Taking his lead from the delinquent adolescents in his practice, he presents a treatment approach in which adolescents are related to as people, rather than as transitory objects passing through a 'stage.' The book presents theory and case examples in a dialectical relationship, illuminating the seamlessness of theory and application.
Bruce Brodie has the rare ability to take a seemingly esoteric theory and explain it in an informative and relatable way. In addition to demystifing object-relations theory, I was inspired and humbled by Brodie's illustration of his work with the clients and interns at the Center. As a therapist, this book has greatly enriched my work with adolescents. I would recommend it to anyone seeking to understand and find more empathy for adolescents in their personal lives or professional practice.
Excellent overview of object relations theory

Excellent, highly-readable overview of object relations theory, in addition to stated topic of adolescence and delinquency. Brodie reminds me of Nancy McWilliams in his ability to present complex ideas simply and understandably. An enjoyable read!
A Book Not To Miss

This book is an excellent reference on both adolescence and object-relations theory. The writing is clear and easy to understand, at times even poetic. The rich and abundant case material makes the book accessible. What comes through and makes the reader return to the book, again and again, is Dr. Brodie's profound respect and love for the young people he has worked with.
