This book assumes you are reasonably familiar with ACOL's bidding system in one of its various forms. This is not a "learn SAYC from the beginning" primer, but it will be a good place to start to consider the bidding system that most of the world uses. You will be able to confidently bid a new system after engaging with the content. The examples and descriptions are derived from the bidding system my partner and I use. We started as ACOL players and wanted to understand the bidding system, including opening a strong notrump and 5-card majors. As we began using SAYC, our version of it, the dramatic improvement was when our partner opened one of a major. We immediately knew that with only three cards in that major, we had a fit. In ACOL, that would take two bids. A second benefit is the 1NT opening in this system shows 15 to 17 HCP. That opening makes it more difficult for the opposition to sensibly and successfully intervene. They need a stronger hand to try to get in the way.
