I had severe acne for over 10 years on my face, back, and shoulders. It started when I was about 14 years old. I went through hell with most of the treatments that were practiced in the late 60s and 70s i.e. antibiotics, ultraviolet lamps, chemical peels, etc. Nothing worked. In 1977 I found this book at the library and followed the author's advice. Following his diet religiously without any other treatments, it took over 4 months for my skin to clear up. It took that long because my acne was very severe. I have been following his recommendations ever since, although I'm able to cheat more now than when I was young. I'm 51 years old now. How do I know the diet works? All I have to do is put a pat of butter on my toast and a couple of days later I'll start breaking out. I highly recommend this book to anyone with severe acne that wants to get rid of it without the use of drugs, topical treatments, and expensive visits to a dermatologist. The rule is to reduce your intake of saturated fats, regardless of source.
Wonderful practical advice

When I first found this book, I did not believe that diet had any effect on acne. After all, I'd been seeing dermatologists for nearly a decade and they always said that diet was not a factor. HOWEVER, when I found the book, I'd been staying with a boyfriend's parents -- I was vegetarian and they didn't know what to feed me but cheese and butter everything. Within days my face was nearly paralysed with cystic acne -- huge purple lesions which were extremely painful, which would explode on to the mirror (sometimes without a mirror and without squeezing). The book recommends a low saturated fat diet. It made sense to me -- my acne was the worst it had ever been, and I had been consuming more saturated fats than I ever had before (I was 23 at the time). Within days of adopting the diet my skin started to clear -- within a few weeks it was pretty much totally clear. I completely recommend this book - I hope it helps others as much as it has me.
Acne Can be Cured

This book was written in 1977, so while it is somewhat outdated, the author had a lot of valid points that made a lot of sense. He isn't into a lot of natural remedies for acne other than a diet low in hard/saturated fats. He goes over the diet in pretty great detail and it gives you a lot of good ideas of where you can improve your own diet. He even gives some recipes. He also includes different treatments that may help such as carbon dioxide slush, skin planing, chemical peels, surgery, skin grafting, and silicone and fibrin foam injections and a few others. He doesn't go into great detail on each of those treatments but enough for you to understand what he is talking about. Overall, I felt this was a very informative book full of information that was new to me. I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about what they can do to help themselves fight acne.
