Two years after four hundred and three of Ossa Reyne's entries went out into the country, one mouth apiece, correctly, in the form, with no tally kept anywhere of what shape any of it took, two of those mouths have gone into the ground. The releasing invented for Ossa's sake in the last one has stopped being a mercy and started being a convenience, used by people who never knew the woman it was built for. A gate raised once, years ago, gets raised again, and this time it does not go away. And Sabel Weir, who has spent her whole life being the one person a country can check its truth against, is finally handed an accusation with her own name on it, one she cannot answer, because the only proof that would clear her is the same kind of proof that could never convict her either.
A THING THAT IS DONE is the sixth book in The Long Memory, and its title is also its warning: everything this country has ever invented to solve one problem becomes, sooner or later, precedent for the next one, whether it deserves to or not. It is the book where every quiet fix from earlier in the series starts collecting interest, and where Sabel discovers that being trusted completely and being believed completely were never the same thing.
