This book advances the study of Manchu word formation by proposing a more detailed typology of its morphological processes, grounded in both prior scholarship and empirical data. It systematically examines the interconnections and distinctions among major word-formation methods, covering not only derivation, compounding, phonetic alternation, and reduplication, but also less frequently addressed mechanisms such as blending and inflectional lexicalization. Through fine-grained descriptive analysis, combined with diachronic and cross-linguistic approaches, the study investigates the functional motivations, grammatical properties, and structural patterns of Manchu derivational morphology. It also probes the boundary between derivation and inflection, as well as the interplay between derivation and compounding. By situating Manchu within a broader comparative framework, this book offers a fresh perspective on both the universal and language-specific dimensions of its word-formation system.
