A Streak of Dakota Dust
"You're a lucky boy."
It's a phrase Kenneth Goetz recalled (and denied) throughout his childhood -- usually after surviving his latest scrape, misadventure, or near disaster on the windswept prairies of South Dakota. But he was lucky. Not because life was easy -- because it was full.
In A Streak of Dakota Dust, Kenneth Goetz invites readers into a childhood that today feels almost unimaginable: a world of prairie roads, stubborn livestock, carnival midways, skunks, storms, and endless horizons. With great warmth, wit, and remarkable honesty, Goetz recounts the unforgettable moments that shaped him - some hilarious, some heartbreaking, all deeply human.
But beneath the colorful stories lies something richer: This is a memoir about growing up before childhood was carefully supervised; about learning resilience through experience rather than instruction; and about discovering that life's greatest lessons often arrive disguised as its greatest mishaps.
Written with profoundly moving humor and humility, A Streak of Dakota Dust is more than a collection of memories. It is a celebration: of family, of perseverance, and of the enduring truth that the simplest lives often leave the deepest impressions.
By the final page, you'll understand why one simple sentence echoed throughout Ken's youth: "You're a lucky boy."
