M K Joseph has written a haunting tale you will never forget. Despite the title, the story is not actually about War and suffering. It is all about the complex interactions our human species has -- and the incredibly complex choices we are forced to make -- when faced with extraordinary circumstances.I first became acquainted with this story through Film -- one of the few movies that is every bit as good as the book. The movie is hard to find on video, and the book is hard to find on the shelf. Both are worth persisting for.Buy the book, see the movie, and see if you agree. In America it would have been a Pulizer prize winner. In New Zealand, it was yet another superb work of art, quickly forgotten.
