Set in Atlanta, Georgia, over the course of four consecutive seasons in the early days of cell phones, the novel delves into the lives of four intriguing, characters: two sisters, the ex-husband of one of them, and the ex-husband's boyfriend. These four principal characters are transplanted Trinidadians who have been living in the United States for over twenty years.
One of the sisters is a stunning, single woman who after a modeling career set back became a nurse. The other sister is a university lecturer and the mother of a teenage son. Her ex-husband is a financial analyst, recently returned to Atlanta, who meets and falls in love with a closeted police detective. The detective is, similarly, also a divorced father, whose ex-wife thought he was too married to his job.
While the family (parents and siblings) of the two sisters are featured prominently in the book, it's the quartet that drives the story in accordance with the chapter titles. We listen in as they "talk" to themselves in their current circumstances and, through engaging flashbacks, the narrative unveils the pivotal moments that shaped their lives, offering readers a deeper understanding of their present-day personas. The story is structured so that the reader gets to experience many of their highs and lows, but especially to share in their smiles and laughter.
There are sad moments, true, but with its many laugh-out-loud inner dialogues, A Smile In Every Season reminds us that sometimes, the conversations we have with ourselves are the ones that keep us sane and smiling through life's chaos.
