4.5 Stars: WWII, Spies and Romance Then and Today

A SECRET TO TELL YOU is a romance that spans decades, war and absence. The narrative structure of past and present in this romance keeps the read suspenseful and deepens the levels of romance as past secrets are uncovered. April Trent restores homes and resells them. While restoring a historic Virginia home, she finds a package of letters hidden in a wall. The letters are in German dated during World War II. When she tries to track down the details of the letters, she is led to Norma Marsh Santini but confronting the family is not just a nice sentimental exchange to say the least. Norma's son is up for election for senator and the mere hint of scandal, even one dated so long ago, might cause big trouble. To make matters worse, April's family vocally supports his opposition. Can he trust her, especially with his grandmother's secrets? Can she trust him, especially when politicians will do anything to win as she well knows from her family? No wonder she is the black sheep of her family, staying away from politics altogether! Can Norma trust anyone to do what she wants and should she reveal her long-held secrets to her family? I thoroughly enjoyed this romance. A SECRET TO TELL YOU has a smooth narrative flow that drew me in and kept me reading until very late in the evening. The suspenseful plot inspired me to find out the unraveling of the secrets and their details without a glance at the clock. The humorous exchanges and sense of life and fun in April and Quinn made me smile and yet A SECRET TO TELL YOU was touched me in a deeper level also as the narrative described their relationships to their families. Thank you Roz Denny Fox for a heart-moving romance and such a satisfying ending!

One of my favorite "Everlasting Love" books

A SECRET TO TELL YOU by Roz Denny Fox August 15, 2007 Rating **** (4 Stars) April Trent fixes up houses for a living, and sells them for a profit. Her parents and family do not approve of her choice in careers, nor do they understand her love of her job. Her current project is a 60-year old farmhouse in the Shenandoah Valley area of Virginia, and at only 31 years old she's financially independent in a field mainly dominated by men, doing what she loves. As she is tearing down a wall in this particular farmhouse, she discovers letters that are obviously intended never to be found again. As she reads them, she realizes they may be of some importance. They are written in a foreign language, probably German, and with her high school German she is able to decipher that the letters were correspondence between a Norma Marsh and a man named Heinz, dated from the 1940's. A passport is also included, showing a young woman with blond hair, with stamps from London and Paris. April figures that Norma is now in her 80's, and begins to wonder who this woman could be. Her brother Eric arrives to tell her about a political dinner being held for Quinn Santini, and after some discussion, April realizes that the home she is remodeling was formerly owned by Anthony Santini, Quinn's grandfather. And Norma, April learns, is Quinn's grandmother. But who was Heinz? April soon meets Quinn and his grandmother Norma, when she tries to return the letters to Norma. Quinn accuses April of breaking and entering onto private property, and thinks she's going to blackmail the family to ruin his political career. But all April wants to do is return the love letters to its rightful owner, if indeed this was the same Norma. Quinn is worried that indeed there is some dark secret in his family's past that could ruin his chances for continued success in the world of politics, and he could be right. A SECRET TO TELL YOU is one of the best stories so far in the EVERLASTING LOVE series by Harlequin. Unlike the previous novels, this book does not share the same formulaic structure. The story remains in the present, as opposed to going back to the past, and then having the story told chronologically up through the present. The historical love story is told through letters that April finds, helping tell the story of Norma and Heinz, two star-crossed lovers who worked for opposite sides during W.W.II and who never had a chance at a happily ever after. Her subsequent marriage to Anthony Quinn and the knowledge that Heinz had died during the war forced her to put that part of her life behind her. But the letters' reappearance was now threatening to bring past memories into the present, possibly ruining the lives of Norma and her family. Norma's job as an Agent during W.W.II is part of her story, recounting how she was involved with a German named Heinz at the height of W.W.II, something she thought would never be revealed. Both April Trent and Quinn Santini get caught up

delightful contemporary romance

Contractor April Trent was tearing down a wall in the sixty years old Shenandoah Valley house she was renovating when she finds love letters written in German, a passport, photos, and a pressed rose tied together by a red ribbon inside and oil cloth; all addressed to a Norma Marsh with an address in France. Local reporter Eric Lathrop comes over to ask her to attend a ball in honor of US Senate candidate Quinn Santini, whose grandfather Tony once owned this farmhouse. Eric sees the letters as a ticket to cover the DC beat instead of Turner County; April sees the papers as personal love letters. April learns that Norma Marsh still lives nearby though her surname is Santini and Quinn is her grandson. She goes to give the letters to Norma, but Quinn suspects she has an ulterior motive as her family supports his opponent and her boyfriend is a hungry journalist. Whereas Norma feels the time has come to reveal her espionage activities during WWII and her secret love, Quinn fears for his campaign even as he detests the though that he is attracted to April, who started the mess in which ancient history will cost him the election. The extended cast turns A SECRET TO TELL YOU into a delightful contemporary romance. Norma's commentary on her days working for the OSS adds a touch of the historical to a fine story line. The lead couple is a delightful pairing as he loves April, but sees her as the harbinger of his election doom. The secondary characters like her family, his opponent, the reporter enhance the fears of Quinn that love six decades old and current will sink his senatorial bid. Harriet Klausner
