A Promise Made In Salt

By Sheenah Middle

A marriage of convenience. A light that must not fail. A secret on both sides.

For three years Tamsin Hext has kept the harbour light on St Anne's Head burning while her father's eyes failed, and nobody in Holmouth has noticed. Now the harbour trustees have, and they mean to give the post to a man.

Daniel Carrow was a riding officer until the spring, when he was dismissed from the Revenue for taking a smuggler's bribe. His brother is the Collector of Customs, and nobody in Holmouth will so much as sit beside him in church.

Tamsin needs a husband the trustees will accept. Daniel needs a name worth having and a roof over his head. So she makes him an offer no gently bred woman would dream of making, on the quay, in front of half the town, and he accepts before either of them can think better of it.

It's a practical arrangement, written down and signed at the kitchen table. It's only for the light. But the light has secrets, and so does the man she married. And on a coast where every family has something to hide, the truth may be the most dangerous promise either of them can make.
