The first of a new mystery series - When journalist Alison Glasby gets the opportunity to work with Fleet Street legend Bill Davenport, she jumps at the chance. Four children were killed in Norfolk in 1969, murdered by Leonie Dellar, and Bill Davenport covered the case. When Glasby finds a photograph of one of her victims that Dellar had hidden, Davenport wants Glasby off the story now. What is it about the murders that he doesnt want her to know?
Alison Glasby is a fledgling reporter for a British newspaper, ambitious but with little experience. Then she gets a break, working with a star crime reporter, Bill Davenport, whose reputation was made when he received a confession from a notorious murderer and wrote a book about the abduction and killing of four young girls. Alison's first task is to cover the death of the murderer at the prison, where she finds a photo of one of the victims and her sister, never before seen. Reviewing Davenport's files, Alison begins to get suspicious about the story as it had been published and begins to question everything, even looking into the facts herself. Davenport, on the eve of his retirement, merely wishes to protect his reputation. The plot involves not only reaching the truth, but growing up both as a person and as a journalist. It is a well-told, clearly written novel, filled with insights. It is well worth reading, and recommended.
