Erik Erikson, appointed by the Christian church to lead a people without a home, must prove to the king of Dal Riata that the Norse settlers are worthy of trust. The price is steep, and Erik cannot demand the obedience and loyalty he needs from his warriors until he embraces his new role in life.

The king's council and Bishop Peader are set against the survival of Erik's people. The king demands are unrelenting, but the reward he offers is the only way for Erik's people to survive. Erik has to find a way to balance his faith in the gods with obedience to the laws of the land, and the laws of the Christian God, all while keeping his people safe from danger on all sides. He never wanted to be a lord, but the burden has been thrust upon him.

Can Erik find a way to be the leader his people need? Even if he leads his people to freedom, will the cruel hand of fate force him to watch the dreams that drew him to Dal Riata fade like the last embers of a dying fire?
