In A Man to Count On, Helen R. Myers once more demonstrates her remarkable gift for thrusting you into a story packed with emotion and grit, and holding you breathlessly captive until the last word. Widower Judge Dylan Justiss is running for a vacancy on the Court of Criminal Appeals - with mentors and bipartisan support allowing him a steady rise up the career ladder. Admired and respected by all, he has a clear shot at the top until a temptation he cannot resist is thrown in his path. Often called the Black Widow for her consistency in winning the death penalty verdict, District Attorney Eva Danielle (E.D.) Martel finds herself side-swiped with a restraining order, keeping her from her two children for negligence and endangerment of a minor. Suddenly stage center in a `media circus', E.D. desperately grapples with the deterioration of her family, her deceitful spouse, and subsequent pressure from her boss, a likely candidate in the next gubernatorial election. Then in the midst of the nightmare comes a compelling voice from her past, Dylan Justiss, offering her escape and comfort. With much convincing, E.D. reluctantly agrees to stay at Dylan's isolated cabin, though she stresses the need for secrecy in order to safeguard his reputation and promising career. While there, E.D. begins to unravel the convoluted circumstances, involving a seedy photographer's webpage displaying her troublesome teenage daughter in embarrassing poses. To further complicate matters, Dylan ignores her pleas for caution, phoning and coming by, determined to lay claim to her soul and to explore the sizzling chemistry which until now, both have always resisted. Though tastefully done, their heartfelt relationship scorches the pages. Finally, events spiral into a surprise twist making for a terrific and genuinely satisfying ending in what I consider some of Myers' best work. Make a prominent place on your keeper shelf for what can only be labeled as `can't put it down' entertainment!
