This book reminds me of my personal experience in the Azores

In August 1965 (c. 8 years after the time frame of this story), I was a 1st Lt in the USAF and I was on a C-124 cargo plane shuttling aircraft engines from a base in Germany to the repair depot at Dover AFB, Delaware. We were scheduled to land at Lajes Field for a 12-hour layover and refueling. Due to weather conditions on Terceira Island we were diverted to Santa Maria Island. This story brought me fond memories of that trip. I was the same age at Sam Golden, the story teller. I was stationed in the UK, and traveled to several of the same European places Sam did. Unfortunately, I didn't share his romantic dalliances (sigh!), but I loved reading this book, and I'm sure that USAF vets who traveled through the Azores will too.
