The story of a man not yet fifty years old walks the room thoughtfully, and with his arms folded across his chest, as Napoleon I once did, and as do the footmen now sitting on the serpent next to the coachmen. After a few turns, he drops into a blue velvet chair, and his face becomes cloudy and mutually serene. Fear and hope, discouragement and joy are painted alternately, as on the face of a shopkeeper who has a ship loaded with rich goods at sea, and who now sees it submerged, and now enter the port.
