Master storyteller and international bestselling author of Redemption, Trinity and Exodus, Leon Uris once again brilliantly interweaves historical fact with gripping fiction in this powerful novel of politics, family, intrigue, love, and the passions that rule human lives. Spanning the decades from World War II to the 2008 presidential campaign, A God in Ruins is the unforgettable story of Quinn Patrick O'Connell, an honest, principled, and courageous man on the brink of becoming the second Irish Catholic President of the United States. In an era morally unmoored, rife with armed separatists and fundamentalist zealotry, Quinn, the last great liberal of the Rocky Mountains, emerges as America's hope to reclaim its great past and its promises of the future. But Quinn is a man with an explosive secret that can shatter his political ambitions and threaten his life--a secret buried for over a half century that even he does not know...
In this book, Leon Uris breaks away from his normal authoring style. He shows his true liberal colors, a nice touch i might add, when there is a *cough*dumb*cough conservative in office. The military exploits of the main character are very interesting, and kept me riveted. The story does jump around alot, but that made it interesting, it was like Quinn was having flashbacks of memory, and added to the story line. The differences in time periods also proved to be an added bonus to the plot. I loved the character development as the background of Quinn began to unfold, proving to be a mysterious and breathtaking story. I was not at all dissappointed by the change in Uris' writing style.
The Best Book I've read in ten years!

I am a dedicated reader of fiction and a would-be author. I found "A God In Ruins" to be both inspirational and emotional. Uris has a message and he conveys it extraordinarily well. His character development is to die for. A book for modern America, timely.
A very good read

I think it is one of his best. So glad to see this after my disappointment with Redemption (I thought it was too much a rerun of the wonderful Trinity)Great scope, conceivable plot, touching love scenes, terrific action, and (believe it or not) a wonderful moral lesson pointing us back to God as the final answer to man's sad state. A novel needed at this time.
A Great Story

Since some of the reader reviews seem to be panning this book, I wanted to add my two cents. I found it very good reading with an excellent message. One that many do not want to hear. Of course, Leon Uris has for thirty years been my favorite writer.I definitely enjoyed this book, and believe it has an important message.
A great "beach" read! Begs a sequel.

I don't know what book the other "reviewers" read, but I couldn't put this one down. Having read ALL of Uris' other works, I rank this one among his best. It was a bit reminiscent of Ayn Rands' idealistic stories. Maybe I'm not the cynic that some are, but I'm hopeful a person as idealistic and morally correct as Quinn Patrick O'Connell will come along to lead us out of the miasma of soft money and slimy politics and into the future. I totally agree with Mr. Uris re: the 2nd Amendment, the sorry state of racism, the prurient interests of the media and the public in devouring the escapades of Bill & Monica (yuk!) and the loss of delight of the American school child in taking a family trip to the library. Brave stroke, Mr. Uris. Fear not and write on! I'll read you!! Regards - L. Dale O'Donnell Sease - Denver.
