A Dissertation On The Propagation Of Christianity In Asia

By Hugh 1777-1856 Pearson

Book Overview

How did the gospel travel from a small Palestinian province to the vast empires of Asia? In this classic Christian dissertation, nineteenth-century clergyman Hugh Pearson reflects on the spread of Christianity in Asia with the calm precision of a historian and the conscience of a pastor. The questions still matter today. Drawing on Scripture, early church testimony and the experience of modern missions in his own century, Pearson traces patterns in Christian missionary history, weighing the spiritual, cultural and political forces that shape the spread of the gospel. At once a historical theology study and a passionate meditation on responsibility, A Dissertation On The Propagation Of Christianity In Asia speaks to readers interested in the history of Christianity in Asia, the Protestant missionary movement and British missionary history. Pearson considers both the promise and the failures of Christian missions in Asia, a searching resource for theology students, for church historians and for thoughtful lay readers who wish to examine how faith crosses languages, traditions and empires. For those studying nineteenth century Christianity or the roots of contemporary mission debates, it offers a lucid primary voice from within that world. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint, a collector's item and a cultural treasure.
