When a young London cabbie saves Justin Mayhew's life, the priggish Earl of Stonegate is shocked to discover that his rescuer is Lady Melanie Baxter, the distant cousin to whom he'd been betrothed as... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I just read this book for the 2nd time (a rare thing when you own so many books as I do!) and I am reminded again how wonderful everything this author has done is! She's written 4 books, all regency romances, and they are all excellent and absorbing. This is no exception. The characters are vivid and likeable, and the story is engaging. Melanie is the daughter of an earl but penniless, and has been supporting herself and her brother by driving a cab in London disguised as a boy. She unknowingly rescues her 2nd cousin from a suspicious attack. It just so happens that they have been engaged since she was a baby and she's always dreamed of someday marrying him- but she finds out that he is about to propose to another lady. So even when he finds out her identity and takes her and her brother to live with him, she will not give in to her feelings for him. He does, but thinks he can't act on it. There's also a good subplot of who is trying to kill him. You're doing yourself a favor if you read this book or any of the other 3 regency romances this author wrote. (she is NOT the same author that has been writing the M/M books under the same name btw).
nice reading

Although this book does not have very strong "romantic tension" in it, I give it five stars because the plot is quite absorbing and well written.
