Shockingly casual racism

I have several books from this series and have found them fairly wholesome, if a little pious. I was absolutely shocked to read this one and discover that one of the central characters has two black cats, named "N word" and "Miss N word", except it's the whole word. These cats play a fairly large role in the story so the word is splashed across pages countless times. Cavalier, thoughtless, casual racism. Considering that this cast of characters is supposed to be good, kind, benevolent, helpful people ... It makes me wonder what the rest of the series is like; the books I've read have been quiet, homey stories of girls trying to do good. This one is a mess, even aside from the horrifying ease with which white characters use that word. How many black cats are named midnight or onyx or shadow... a million options exist and this character chose ... that.
