But the Veldran Compact has not changed. The oath that binds Maren is four hundred years old and unyielding. Ysol's family is building a sympathy campaign with her captivity at its center. And a court observer has begun collecting information neither of them can afford to have collected.
When Ysol finally tells the truth - not managed, not strategic, simply the truth - she does not wait to see what Maren does with it. She leaves instead, stepping out of the equation so that whatever comes next can come cleanly. She goes north to find the sea she has never seen. She leaves the door open.
What Maren does with an open door is the question the entire novel has been building toward.
A Crown for a Cage is a slow-burn political romance about two women who are each other's most unexpected complication - one learning for the first time what it means to want something for herself, the other discovering that integrity and rigidity are not the same thing. It is a story about cages we build and cages we choose and the difference, which turns out to matter enormously.
