Back in Sundown, Montana, Shallie Malone faced a myriad of knowing glances. The father of her child had abandoned her and there didn't seem to be any knight in shining armor on her horizon. Then Mac McDonald demanded she accept his marriage proposal. This man from her past offered to give her baby a name and give Shallie the secure future she desperately craved. Passion made theirs more than an in-name-only marriage and Shallie found herself falling for her husband. But, still hiding one last, scandalous secret, how could she dare ask him to return her love?
I loved this story from the very first page until the very last. I love that both characters are easy for the readers to feel a connection with. Shallie is vulnerable but determined not to show it even to Mac at first. After years she has returned to her hometown to have and raise her child alone without the father. Of course in this hometown is the best friend that she left behind years ago. He takes to being her best friend again after all these years and wants to help her care for the baby. He even proposes to her and lets her know that he wants to be a part of her life and her child's life. All this sounds good to the independent Shallie that finds she may need more to her suddenly empty life. The only question is how to keep the secret that could destroy her future with Mac and drive him away. A terrific read that I would recommend to anyone for a quick and fulfilling read.
BEST FRIENDS CHANGE OUR LIVES

This book is yet another example of Cindy Gerard's masterful storytelling. She crafts her characters with such depth and humanity that you want the story to last much longer than the pages available. Like her other creations, the couple in this book will become close friends of yours and you will feel like you know them and want to continue sharing their lives. The beauty of this book is that the reader not only gets to richly enjoy these new friends, but also gets to check in with and savor further the old friends devoted readers have met earlier in Sundown, Montana. This series of books just continues to warm us like the old friends introduced in this new chapter. Brett "Mac" McDonald and Shallie Malone have been friends since childhood. From the very first day Shallie showed up in town, Mac has appreciated her spirit, courage, sass and wit. Shallie grew up tough because she had to, and does not see what special gifts she has to offer. She does, however, know what security and warmth her friendship with Mac has always provided. There has not been much that she could count on in her world, but Mac was one thing that was rock solid. Both of them have grown in the years they have been apart, but the core of their love and respect for one another draws them back together again. Both of them will stumble with their relationship due to their deep fear of ever losing the friendship that has come to mean so much to them. Cindy Gerard breathes such contagious rich complexity into these two people who both need each other that you will root for them from the start. Ms. Gerard lets them be human with human misunderstandings and baggage, and brings us along for a ride that will make us smile and cry and laugh out loud along with Shallie & Mac. You will want to read this book all in one sitting and you will want to add it your permanent collection. Don't miss these two very special people!
