The core of this study examines the characteristics a book should possess in order to help children cope with their parents' divorce or separation. To this end, a review of the literature addressing the problematic or traumatic life situations faced by children was conducted. Subsequently, criteria-also based on the literature-were developed to identify what might help children cope with this experience. Six aspects were identified that a book should possess to facilitate successful coping. The portrayal of the protagonists' lived experiences and the consideration of the main characters' feelings were key points in the analysis of the children's books. The provision of coping strategies for children in various situations and with specific problems was examined. The insights offered by the books for parents and other caregivers were highlighted. The coherence and comprehensibility of the plots were discussed, and the impact and overall impression of the book were described. Based on these characteristics, four children's books and two guidebooks were subsequently analysed.
