Well written

I was enthusiastic about reading this book, because the novel takes place during a period of Jamaican history that is spoken of in whispers, among a generation that is dying. I started the opening chapters, the book was well written, but I discontinued reading as the book was full and overflowing with graphic violence and very creative combinations of Jamaican expletives that I have only heard, but never expected to see in print. This book is not for the faint of heart.

Fantastic book!!

one of my favorite books

This book was honestly wild from start to finish. My senior year we had to do a book report on a book that won the Man Booker Prize, and I'm so glad I chose this one. The way the author captures the true feelings of the characters is represented so well, and the history of Kingston is spot on. James himself being from Kingston was able to understand the things he put his characters through, despite not having lived through any of the scenarios. It did get a little hard for me to follow at times because of the constant character jumps between each chapter, but regardless, I fell in love with the story, the characters, and the writing style.
