A Good Traveler's Guide to Argentina's History

This book by the noted Argentinian scholar Félix Luna is a model for a short book dealing with his country's rather intricate history. There are numerous cross-currents that interweave themselves over a 200 year period and that still affect this richly endowed but troubled country. For instance, Argentinians are still divided over whether Buenos Aires should be the nation's capital, and as recently as twenty years ago, the issue of moving it to the Patagonian city of Viedma was considered. Instead of leaving the reader all tied up in knots, A SHORT HISTORY OF THE ARGENTINIANS succeeded in wanting me to read more. (Unfortunately, most of the other Luna books I'd like to read haven't been translated into English yet.) Luna's method is to treat the history of his country in a series of fourteen short essays with useful intros and occasional zoom-outs showing the situation in Argentina compared to what was happening at the time in Europe and the United States. He ties it all together in a fifteenth chapter that stops shortly after Juan Perón's removal in 1955. The only negative comments I have have more to do with the translation and edition than Mr. Luna's fine work, which by itself merits the book five stars. Cynthia Mansfield and Ian Barnett's translation is a little odd and inappropriately colloquial at times. One question began "How come...?" instead of a simple "Why...?" Also, the translators' frequent use of the term "swingeing" still confuses me. This is a book that should be reissued with a new translation, maps, illustrations, index, and bibliography. In the meantime, however, the book as it stands is still well worth reading.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND

A great overview to the history of Argentina. The only drawback is that Felix Luna does not go into the history of the dirty war. I read this book while in Buenos Aires and it was helpful in understanding the political and social history of the Argentinian people.
