These poems arrived the way everything else in Dr Q's life arrives-in wild, uninvited clusters of pandemonium and sudden, startling serenity. She did not plan a theme, but she kept noticing how bedlam and tranquility sometimes arrive on her doorstep together. A toaster full of philosophy, a child's fistful of jellybeans, the precise danger of an old wringer washer, the brush of butterfly wings against an eyelash-each moment was written down before it could escape becoming a poem. Now they belong to anyone who also hears the hush inside the noise.
