Elmore is timeless

I know this is one of Elmore's earlier works, but he is so good. He just keeps you reading. I love the way he works history into his novels, whether they are in Cuba, Detroit or anywhere else. And his characters are alive, and they do the darndest things! Always a good read, that Mr. Leonard!

Entertaining, but no masterpice!

This novel was definitely entertaining. It served its purpose. It gave me something to read that held my attention. As most Leonard novels, there is plenty of hip lines, drug use, sex, and of course the crime. I do not generally enjoy Leonard's novels. I enjoy the movies that are made from them. After reading "Unknown Man #89" and being extremely disappointed, it has been a few years since I have even attempted to read one of his novels. I must say that I now know how to read a Leonard novel. Not expecting much! The story starts off easy enough and runs smoothly. Not a time in the reading did I feel there was anything unnecessary or boring. The plot is not too original, but easy to accept as a possible real situation. I would suggest this to anyone who is looking for something fun, quick, and easy to read. There is a lot of inappropriate sex and language, so not recommended for anyone under 17.

compact, intense crime drama ... and believable too

'52 Pickup' is my first book by Elmore Leonard and, upon finishing it, I can say it won't be my last. Despite being written about 30 years ago the book is startlingly fresh. While I think there has been some forgotten film adaptation made of this novel I should think film producers would be smart to take a re-look at this gem.The plot? The main story is about a bunch of Detroit gangsters looking to extort money from a independent businessman. It seems they have some incrimminating photos of him caught "in the act" with his mistress. But the plan goes horribly wrong thanks to the ingenuity of our victim-turned-hero. Sounds contrived? It isn't at all. The author does a great job in creating very believable characters and capturing all the emotion and angst. Formulatic in overall concept (criminal intent foiled by the victim) but remarkably original in its execution.Bottom line: a terrific read.

Once again, Elmore hits a homer!

A great quick read with the usual shaddy cast of characters out for some cash or a little revenge in Motown.

Great Read

Elmore Leonard gives the reader more in 200 pages than most authors do in 600. This tightly wound thriller has all the elements Leonard fans have come to expect-- pitch-perfect dialogue, realistically-carved characters and a slam-bang ending. And not a wasted word.
