Steve Johnson grew up in the shadow of the first Cold War. His father, Commander Jack Johnson, survived a deadly encounter beneath the Arctic ice in 1988, where one Soviet threat concealed another. Years later, Steve carries that lesson into the U.S. Army, first as an Abrams tanker and later as an intelligence operative trained to question the accepted picture.
While moving through Russia, Steve sees what NATO intelligence has missed. The 4th Guards Tank Brigade is not where Moscow says it is. NATO expects the attack through Belarus, Poland, and the Baltic approaches, while Army Group South is moving toward Moldova and Romania.

The information reaching Collier comes through the Flying Dutchman - an unofficial network linking Jasper van Dijk inside NATO, Claire Rousseau tracing Russian money, Cypher penetrating closed intelligence systems, and Steve providing the judgment of a soldier who knows what an armored formation looks like when it is preparing for war.
Together, they give Collier a picture no single government possesses.
He has enough evidence to understand the danger and enough military power to intervene, but not enough time to wait for the normal process. If he waits, Moldova may fall and Romania may become the next battlefield. If he acts, he must accept responsibility for going farther than any commander around him is prepared to go.
What Collier chooses to do changes the way the battles are led. Behind the Russian advance, General Markov and the Perun Initiative have spent years shaping military decisions, moving money beyond Kremlin control, manipulating intelligence, and building influence inside institutions meant to answer to Moscow. Their deception keeps NATO focused north while Army Group South moves toward the southern flank.
For Steve, the crisis is personal. His history with GRU officer Anya Kuznetsova places him beside someone capable of exposing Markov's network from within, while Katya Belikova remains the woman around whom he has built the life he hopes the war will allow him to keep.
As Russian armor advances, the Flying Dutchman feeds Collier intelligence quickly enough to change decisions in real time, while Black Sea operations, strategic air power, and the threat of tactical nuclear weapons alter the battlefield around him.
When it is over, Russia is left in shambles but capable of rebuilding after Markov's assets are frozen, the Flying Dutchman has helped force a tenuous peace, and the United States announces that it will leave NATO.
