160 Acres of Betrayal: The Allotment Era

160 Acres of Betrayal is a manifesto told through poems and prose-a story of Indian Territory, of land, loss, and survival. This work follows the journey of Mvskoke Indians from the Trail of Tears (Nene Estemerkv, the Road of Misery), through the Allotment Era (1887-1934), and into present-day Tulsa, Oklahoma. During this time, the U.S. government dismantled the communal way of life held by the Mvskoke people, forcing individual land ownership and opening the door to exploitation.

For my ancestors-who did not speak English and believed land was meant to be shared-allotment brought betrayal, not opportunity. If an Indian's land held value, their life could be at risk.

Through these pages, I reclaim the voices of those who carried more than they were ever meant to bear-and remind readers that the story of Indian Territory is not over.

The second edition includes research tips and tools to help you begin your own journey into your family's allotment-era history.
