The Art of War by Sun Tzu is the earliest existing military treatise in the world. Comprising thirteen chapters and just over five thousand characters, it covers all aspects of military theory and practice. As the saying goes, ""What came before Sun Tzu was not omitted by him; what came after him cannot surpass him."" Hailed as the ""Sacred Classic of Military Science,"" it holds an extremely high position both in China and in the global history of military thought.

The Art of War can be roughly divided into three parts: Chapters 1-3 (Planned Attack, Waging War, Strategic Attack) may be regarded as the ""Way"" of warfare; Chapters 4-6 (Tactical Dispositions, Energy, Weaknesses and Strengths) may be regarded as the ""Methods"" of employing troops; and Chapters 7-13 (Maneuvering, Nine Changes, Marching, Terrain, The Nine Terrains, Fire Attack, The Use of Spies) may be regarded as the ""Techniques"" of achieving victory. Together they form a rigorous theoretical system. Within this system, the grand strategic vision that commands the whole, the idea of ""winning without fighting"" as the highest form of ""complete victory,"" the effective concept of ""decisive victory,"" the emphasis on the quality of military commanders, and the principle of governing the army through both civil and military means all possess immense value and lasting influence, representing the essence of Sun Tzu's thought.
