Book Overview

Gachiakuta is a hit dystopian action manga critics are calling "the next big shonen series "

Framed for murder and cast off a floating city into the abyss, a young boy grapples with the monsters the elite high above would rather forget...

Rudo lives in the slums of a floating city, where the poor scrape by under the shadow of the rich who live a sumptuous life, simply casting their garbage off the side, into the abyss. Then one day, he's falsely accused of murder, and his wrongful conviction leads to an unimaginable punishment--exile off the edge, with the rest of the trash.

Down on the surface, the cast-off waste of humanity has bred vicious monsters, and if Rudo wants to have any hope of discovering the truth and seeking vengeance, he will have to master a new power and join a group known as "The Cleaners" who battle the hulking trash beasts of the Pit

The more the rich glitter, the higher the price paid by the poor in this gritty, action-adventure manga with dark graffiti-inspired art, perfect for fans of Battle Angel Alita and Deadman Wonderland.

A story of environmental struggles, personified!

4.5* stars. Summary: With the intrigue, mystery, and action, this volume could hook anyone! There's cool art, a unique magic system, and an environmentally conscious message, all of which were a joy to read. I would recommend this to absolutely anyone who liked anything mentioned above. Full review: This is most assuredly a love letter to everyone about taking better care of the environment and of the things in our lives. The message of the story was blatant but well delivered; it was reminiscent of Cells at Work!, Vol. 1, about how taking care of one section of your body helps take care of it all. How we care for the objects in our lives can tell a story about how we take care of our fellow humans (and other creatures). Okay, yes, I may be overthinking a bit, heck, I probably am, but that was the moral I got from reading Gachiakuta, and I really liked it. Now, for the actual story. I liked how the first chapter was essentially an epilogue. It was a nice setup for the world, and while it was a little jarring going from that to the second chapter in a completely different setting, it was still a good setup and made me prepared for what happened a bit more in the second world, a.k.a. The Pit. I'm really curious how the mystery that started in the first setting - the Sphere - is going to play out now that Rudo got "dropped" into The Pit. The action was on point and at many times unexpected, in the best of ways! Each page left me on my toes, wanting more, and more, and more. The art was really cool and oftentimes gave a bit of a horror vibe with the intense facial close-ups. I love horror, so that was awesome. But overall, the art was simultaneously perfect for action, but also silly, and a bit uncanny. The "magic" system is pretty unique to my knowledge, and something I'm really looking forward to reading more about in further volumes.

Our newest survey found that Americans are consuming 50 percent more internationally produced TV shows and books than they were five years ago. This proved to be true across generational and gender lines. One of the most popular forms of international content is manga, a style of Japanese comic books.
