A sweet and supernatural love story at a detective agency, by the creator of The Country Without Humans (also from Seven Seas) Features an eye-catching blend of black, white, and blue artwork. And don't miss the anime Yakou Shizuka, a quiet and bashful woman, works at a detective agency. Her boss Tounome, who owns the company, is the gentlemanly type, kind and dapper, though he has an extra talent--he's invisible His special ability is perfect for detective work, but he quickly comes to find it doesn't work on Yakou, who is blind and always knows if he's near. Charmed, Tounome is determined to get her to date him and isn't against using his many skills. Yakou's quirky coworkers, a contrarian human man and a sisterly beastwoman, kindly watch over her as she stumbles and blushes through the uncharted waters of office romance.
The bashful human receptionist, Yakou Shizuka, works at a detective agency. With the heightened senses that help her navigate the world as a blind woman, she can always tell when her dapper boss, Tounome, is near. Being an invisible man in a modern world like our own, full of unique races, many overlook his presence, but Yakou makes him feel seen in a way no one else could. Not even their quirky coworkers—a sisterly beast woman and a crotchety human man. With the help of Yakou's coworkers, she learns to navigate the world of first love with a man who cannot be seen.
I want to gush. I need to gush! The adorableness of this series is overflowing in me! So much so, I forgot to review this volume before I read volume two... This volume alone will get you absolutely hooked! Tounome is an absolute gentleman and makes sure Yakou is comfortable and aware when they're on their date or together in general. The power dynamic of her being an employee and him being a boss does not play into it whatsoever. Tounome makes sure that they go at Yakou's pace, and often times seems just as awkward and naive about dating as she does.
The coworkers are definitely more than just side/background characters and seem like they will be developed in future volumes, along with the main couple. (There are lickable snacks, like cat treats, for the beast folk, how cool and cute is that!)
The art is gorgeous! While most of the background - which is a beautiful teal blue - is not as detailed as other series. However, I believe that has to do with the story being in Yakou's point of view. With Yakou being blind, she obviously can't see her environment in detail, but she still can picture where she is with general knowledge and common sense, particularly places she knows well, like the office she works at. I'm not sure if that was the intention, but it sure feels like it, and that "detail" really helped the series feel more grounded in realism with all of the different fantasy/paranormal races being present.
Also, the characters themselves had plenty of personality to them. My take is that while environments would be harder for her to pin down, people with their voices, their scent, and any other characteristic or personality traits that Yakou can note, she's able to make a better mental image of them in her head. But again, all of that is my theory, and I could be totally off. But if it's true, I really appreciate the forethought that went into the design, because it is incredible.
Short version; gorgeous art with a distinct pop of color for manga, the romance is so sweet and wholesome, and the interactions between all the characters are hilarious and adorable. Hopefully, feature volumes will have a little bit more detective work, though this volume did have some. I'm excited to see what happens and look forward to reading more!
