Beasts of the Four Nations (Mystical Creatures from the Avatarverse)
Published by C.M. Bishop , 5 months ago
Beasts of the Four Nations is an encyclopedia of knowledge about the animals from the Avatarverse (specifically from Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra) we know and love, and the ones we hardly get to see. I am pleased to learn more about the animal companions and wild ones in the Avatarverse since I love animals. Unfortunately, this volume does not include all the animals of the Avatarverse. One animal I noticed that was missing was the rabaroo.
The introduction is written by the show’s co-creator, Bryan Konietzko, who drew most of the animal hybrid species from a young age. The rest of the pages are written by John O’Bryan, one of the writers of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The writing is from Aang’s POV, with other characters making notes, like Zuko mentioning how turtle-ducks seem to have teeth. He learned that through personal experience. There’s a lot of humor woven into the information.
There’s much to be explored. Aang mentions where to find each animal, whether they are friendly, what they eat, and whether you can ride them. They are categorized. I love how this book was dedicated to the Ba Sing Se library. There are many images of the wondrous creatures throughout the book, drawn by amazing artists. Thankfully, Sokka didn’t have a hand in any of these.
I love the cover with the animals from the four nations circling the lion-turtle’s head and the map of the four nations inside. I love the book as a whole, and I recommend it to any reader who wants to learn more about the Avatarverse animals.
