This is a truly inspirational book. It is a must for any one who has faced the challenges, either personally or with a family member, of a debilitating illness. The author does a wonderful job of sharing her story. What was at first seen as a devastating disease became an opportunity for personal and spiritual growth for her and those around her. Great message!!!
A "How To" Manual for Healing!
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 23 years ago
"Stepping Out" is such an empowering "how to" manual for recovery! Ms. Saltzman's Criteria for Choosing Therapeutic Programs, Spiritual Guidelines for Healing and Growth, and her Letter (pg. 239), are incredibily powerful "road maps" that can safely guide an individual on their path to health.Anyone going through a physical/emotional/spiritual transition (as I was) will be infused with hope while reading Ms. Saltzman's uplifting and practical story. She validates the truth: that by trusting our own intuition, and acting on it, we begin the healing process. We cannot be reminded enough that transformation is not about loss or limitations, but is forever leading us on to a deeper place. Ms. Saltzman's words have greatly assisted in my own healing, and continue to inspire me.I highly recommend "Stepping Out!"
Alice should step into many lives
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 25 years ago
Stepping Out is a book with double meaning. Our friend, Alice Saltzman, was told she would never walk again. We have seen her move about with the use of two canes, moving her legs. She swims with the fish. She is a spark of hope for anyone diagnosed with a grave disease or for those who love persons so diagnosed. She has stepped out of her paralysis and stepped out of her privacy to share her story with us.Alice's book covers not only her illness and her relationship with doctors, but her relationships with the members of her family of origin as well as procreation including three children of widely varying ages and a husband. She is frank in her discussion about physicians. This book might be read by medical students to give them insight on how not to confront patients, and how to recognize the means patients can use to work on their own healing. The time physicians need for their patients should be noted by the hospitals in which they serve and by the health care plans that pay them. People are people and cannot act as machines nor treat people as cut and dried cases. Our experience with oncologists is that there are many physicians who are amongst the most humane people one is likely to encounter. How is it that Reynolds Price in A Whole New Life and Alice in Stepping Out find such cruel physicians? Could it be that physicians are changing? Alice tells an honest story of her seeking alternatives and learning who she is in the process.
