Brian Wayne Wells, Esquire, reviews World of Ancient Times
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 28 years ago
This is a worthy old chestnut in the library of the current reviewer. It serves as a reference book most often while the reviewer is reading other books or is watching some special on television about ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Hittites, Babylonians, Greeks or Romans. For more than a generation Roebuck's "The World of Ancient Times" (1966) has serves as a text book for college survey courses on ancient world history. In all that time it has not been subplanted by a newer text. It is wonderfully indexed and the text moves right along and covers the entire topic from the dawn of civilization in modern day Iraq in 8000 B.C.E until the fall of the Roman Empire in the 4th Century. It shows promise of serving as a text and reference book for another generation.
