Charlie's Favorites

Charlie joined ThriftBooks in 2016 in the shipping department of our Portland facility and transferred to our Dallas facility as a Collectibles Receiver in 2018. In his own words: "My background is primarily as an insatiable reader and aspiring writer. For a healthy fraction of the past 20 years, I have read between 50 and 100 novels annually. Dovetailing this with my proclivity toward expression and art, I have undertaken spare-time literary pursuits to the tune of a 125,000 word novel in progress. The final draft should tip the scales at a meaty 300,000 words."

Eyeless in Gaza

Limited First Edition signed by Huxley. Huxley will forever be the lodestar for brooding humanists who urgently wish to write but cannot be bothered with trifles like plot or action. Eyeless In Gaza is perhaps his finest overall novel and one of the reasons I picked up the pen. And it's signed. Huxley himself handled this book. That's too groovy for words.

Island

First American edition of Huxley's last novel, this title is the utopian answer to Brave New World, and a far superior piece of literature. His philosophy is not without cracks and flaws, but he can be forgiven because of the provocative and trenchant nature of his work.

Omensetter's Luck

The debut novel from one of America's most venerated writers, William H. Gass. Virtually unknown outside academic circles, this difficult, yet rewarding writer had a slight output in terms of quantity, but all his books are worshiped by those who pick up the pen. Highly experimental, rarely accessible, he spent his adult life as a philosophy professor at Washington University in St. Louis, on faculty with John Hawkes and Stanley Elkin. An astounding conglomeration of talent.

Ulysses

First legal American edition of the greatest novel of the last century. The irrefragable brilliance of James Joyce has bumfuzzled and scintillated readers for over a century now. Never has anybody been in finer form than in Ulysses. The first time you could legally possess this chef d'oeuvre was when Random House published it in 1934. And here it is.

Samuel's Favorites

Samuel has been with ThriftBooks for over 2 years as a receiver, where he worked with Collectibles. He became a Collectibles receiver in 2020. In his own words: "In all honesty, I didn't read much growing up. Since I've started working here, my knowledge and passion for books has grown. I've learned so much and can see why books are as popular as they are. I have a specialty in history, science fiction, math, and science."

Last Continent: New Tales of Zothique

Limited First Edition signed by all of the contributors. It's not every day we find a book signed by all the contributors, in this case the work of a variety of indie writers. It's a nice book for anyone looking to branch out to other authors.

Joseph's Favorites - from the Collection of Gavin E. Smith

Joseph is a Collectibles Lead who has been with ThriftBooks for four years. Joseph has 25 years of experience in sourcing, buying, and selling used books and media. He specializes in pop culture, performing arts, children's books, and ephemera. Joseph has chosen to highlight books from the collection of Mr. Gavin E. Smith.

The Collection of Mr. Gavin E. Smith

ThriftBooks is proud to present the private collection of Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith was a lifelong book lover and avid collector, bookseller, and contributor to the complex cult of fan-generated literature paying homage to the twentieth century writings of supernatural and burgeoning fantasy genre writers originally popularized in pulp publications such as WEIRD TALES magazine in the 1930s and 1940s. The collection includes highly regarded luminary authors who have influenced the contemporary worlds of visual art, cinema, popular music, video games, and pop culture writ large. While we can't highlight the entire collection here, we've chosen a few of Joseph's favorites.
