Patrick O'Brian Profile Picture

Patrick O'Brian, born Richard Patrick Russ in 1914 in Buckinghamshire, England, was well-known for his series of novels set in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. Among his honors was the award of Commander of the British Empire (C.B.E.) Master and Commander is the first book of the twenty-novel series, begun in 1969. The Peter Weir film, Master and Commander, The Far Side of the World, is loosely based on O'Brian's work. O'Brian's education was sporadic. O'Brian published two novels, a collection of stories, and several uncollected stories under his original name. By the mid-1930s, he was training to be a pilot in the Royal Air Force. This was a failed effort. O'Brian moved to London where he may have been involved in intelligence efforts. He later moved to Wales and to a Catalan village in southern France, where he became a highly respected translator from French to English and wrote novels and short stories. O'Brian was a staunch defender of his privacy, even refusing to include any biographical information on his book jackets. As well as his historical novels, O'Brian wrote three contemporary novels, six story collections, two biographies, and a history of the Royal Navy aimed at young readers. He died in 2000.
