Rochlin brings the Sonora alive

What a great surprise this book was. Who would have ever thought - a group of lively, adventurous Jews creating a community in the Mexican desert. The heroine, Freida, has all the attributes of a great pioneer. She's adaptable, energetic, unflappable, non-judgemental and has a sense of humor. This book is about survival and adventure, not only physical but spiritual. I'm glad to know that it's part of a series and that there is more.

I much admire Harriet Rochlin's latest work...

"I much admire Harriet Rochlin's latest work, The First Lady of Dos Cacahuates. Freida and Bennie are as engaging a couple as one could meet in the pages of an historical novel; and Ms. Rochlin's command of her research--in the interest of fiction--is not only impeccable, but sensitive as well. The portrayal of Jews in this western setting could become either stereotype or caricature, but Rochlin invests her narrative, her people, and their lives with fully dimensioned frshness and energy."
