undiscovered gem

There is so much to this book, suffice it to say I can only provide a superficial review. Generally it is about WWI, the political scene following WWI and east Africa during that time. The author in relatively few words manages to depict the horrors during and following WWI and preceding WWII. He also paints a spare but very compelling picture of life in Africa during and after the war. Most importantly James' ability to portray the very interesting, complex and flawed personalities of his characters is truly satisfying, thought provoking and the heart of the novel. These people are full of contradictions - honorable at times, repulsive and hideously selfish at others. They are a product of a time when class distinctions held much more influence over a person's self perception and life choices. James is a master at conveying this world of British sensibility so unlike that of the American. This book was published twenty years ago. I was so enthralled by it I am surprised mine is the first layman's review at this site. It was just serendipity that I stumbled across the book. I am writing this review in hopes that others will "stumble" across this wonderful and fascinating book.
